Yes.
I know it is the 2nd of February.
But THIS day is the day I like to think of as the first day of any year and I would urge others to follow me in this way of thinking.
Today is the day that the ancient pagans celebrated as Imbolc and the Christian church later adopted it as Candlemass. Either way, the day was marked as a celebration of the returning of the light. Not Spring yet, but an acknowledgement that it was most surely not far away. A day for finally starting to shake off the cobwebs of gloomy old winter (at least in our minds- never mind that howling gale outside where you are),a day, perhaps, to pull the seed packets out and sake stock for the coming veg patch and flower beds. Clean the tools. Sharpen the secateurs. Find the seed trays. Ahhh…lovely!
Or, it’s a great day for pulling everything out in the kitchen and having a good old clean, sort, and chuck out. That’s me today. It’s all to go with a renewed healthy eating plan which the 2nd of February, not the 1st of January, is suited for as a starting point. I always feel that it takes ALL of January to get over Christmas. Changing the way we eat on the 1st of January, so close to all the festive excess, seems an unnecessarily punitive experience and, personal experience has shown, it is unlikely to be a great success.
Now, we can feel a bit of warmth in the sun on our faces as we walk outside. We can smell the good Earth smells just starting here and there. The birds are more than frisky already and will be making nests in all the places I really wish they wouldn’t if I am not alert.
But, most of all for me, it is a great day to celebrate just being here. 2023 was not my best year but I did learn a lot, some of which I plan to bring into these pages. Never mind. I hope this will be my year of adventures. Who’s coming with me?
